Summer Detox

The thing is, I don't believe in diets, but I do believe in staying healthy. For the past six months I've been on a semester abroad in Italy, and it turns out that the diet of a starving artist in Milan basically consists of Turkish kebabs and 1 Euro wine. At first I thought I could get away with not seeing lettuce for six months, but after only a couple weeks I started getting headaches and feeling constantly tired, which also got me behind on school work. Now that I've been back home and on break for a couple weeks, I've decided to start a serious detox: eating healthy, getting back into my work-out routine and drinking lots of delicious summer-appropriate iced-beverages. For caffeine addicts like myself, it's always hard to begin a detox, because cutting back on coffee can give us fairly awful withdrawal symptoms, and so for the first few weeks of my detox I've decided to – instead of eliminating caffeine completely – start a tea diet. I say diet because, although I am not necessarily trying to lose weight, a detox requires a great deal of organization and consistency, much like a weight-loss plan. Since I am currently visiting my parents in Cancun and it happens to be the most humid city on the planet, one cannot just drink hot tea and not melt, so I came up with three tropical iced tea recipes that are perfect for a summer detox:

1. Iced Grapefruit Mint Tea

  • 1 Mint Tea bag
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 grapefruit
  • 1/2 cup chilled seltzer
  • ice

- add brown sugar if desired

Boil waiter in small pot and insert Mint Tea bag; cover and brew 5 minutes. Remove tea bag and squeeze. Stir in brown sugar if desired; chill.

Slice grapefruit and place inside glass; combine tea and seltzer and pour into same glass. Add ice and enjoy!

2. Iced Mango Green Tea

  • 1 Green tea bag
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 sliced mango
  • 1/2 cup mango nectar
  • ice

Boil waiter in small pot and insert Green Tea bag; cover and brew 5 minutes. Remove tea bag and squeeze. Stir in mango nectar; chill.

Place sliced mango and ice inside glass; pour in tea mixture and drink up!

3. Iced Honey Lemon Green Tea

  • 1 Green Tea bag
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • ice

Boil waiter in small pot and insert Green Tea bag; cover and brew 5 minutes. Remove tea bag and squeeze. Stir in honey; chill.

Slice 1/2 lemon and place inside glass, with ice. Squeeze 1/2 lemon into tea mixture. Pour mixture inside glass, taste and be refreshed!

There are of course hundreds of other equally-delicious iced tea recipes one could prepare, don't be afraid to make up your own and enjoy it on a sunny day by the pool or even in the office! A fresh, healthy drink in the morning or in the middle of a hot day will surely brighten up your mood and lead you on the right path to a wonderful summer detox.
